Whether you're releasing your first single or your fifth, running paid ads for your music can feel overwhelming — especially when the relationship between Spotify, your distributor, and platforms like TikTok or Meta isn't obvious. This guide walks you through the full process in order, from getting your music live to running a campaign that actually reaches listeners wherever they stream.

Step 1: Upload your music through distribution

Your first step is getting your music onto streaming platforms via a distributor — DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby are the most common. Once your release is live, you'll have a Spotify track link. That link is a destination, not ad content. Understanding that distinction is the foundation of everything that follows.

Step 2: Add a Spotify Canvas through Spotify for Artists

Canvas is the short looping video that plays behind your track on Spotify mobile. It lives inside Spotify for Artists — not inside your distributor. Once your music is live, claim your artist page at artists.spotify.com, navigate to Music → your track → Add Canvas, and upload a 3–8 second vertical video loop.

DistroKid artists have access to a free Canvas Generator that lets you browse royalty-free clips, crop and trim your selection, and download a file ready to upload. It's worth doing: Spotify reports that tracks with Canvas see up to 120% more streams, and listeners are 20% more likely to save the track.

Best Practice: Keep Canvas visuals atmospheric or loosely tied to the mood of the track. A seamless loop matters more than a flashy one — if you notice the cut, so will your listeners.

Step 3: Create a smart link as your landing page

Rather than sending ad traffic directly to Spotify, use a smart link — a single URL that detects a listener's preferred streaming platform and routes them there automatically. This prevents wasting ad spend on Apple Music, YouTube Music, or Amazon Music users who don't have Spotify.

DistroKid's Hyperfollow generates a smart landing page for every release automatically. Other popular options include Toneden (free), Hypeddit (free tier), Linkfire, Feature.fm, and Smarturl.

Best Practice: Choose a smart link tool that shows click-through data by platform. Knowing whether your audience skews Spotify or Apple Music sharpens every future campaign.

Step 4: Create your add creative independently

TikTok and Meta ads require you to upload your own video or image file. Your Spotify link plays no role in the ad creative itself. You'll need to produce a short clip: a lyric snippet, a behind-the-scenes moment, a mood visual with the track playing underneath, or any scroll-stopping hook aimed at your target audience.

Best Practice: For TikTok, the first 2–3 seconds must stop the scroll — autoplay is unforgiving. For Meta, vertical 9:16 video performs best across Reels and Stories placements. Keep the clip under 15 seconds and open with the most compelling part of the track, not the intro.

Step 5: Set your smart link as your destination

When building your campaign in TikTok Ads Manager or Meta Ads Manager, paste your smart link URL into the destination or call-to-action field — not the raw Spotify link. Your creative is the video you made. Your destination is the smart link landing page. This setup gives your ad spend the broadest possible reach regardless of which platforms your listeners use.

Best Practice: Test two or three different video creatives against the same smart link destination. Small differences in the opening frame or audio hook can produce dramatically different click-through rates. Let the data decide what to scale.

Quick reference

Canvas → Upload via Spotify for Artists, not your distributor

Ad creative → Your own video file — Spotify links don't embed as content in ads

Ad destination → Smart link, which routes listeners to their preferred platform

Free smart link options → DistroKid Hyperfollow, Toneden, or Hypeddit free tier
